1. Rallye Monte Carlo

Reigning world Champion Juha Kankkunen had made a switch to Lancia and was dominant in his first event for the Italian outfit. However, he got a first hand experience about italian way to handle things right at the start as Cesare Fiorio ordered him to let Massimo 'Miki' Biasion past and take the win. At that point Juha was leading the event by over a minute, but he had no choise but to let the Italian past and take 2nd place.

Audi took on the new Group A rallying with their 200 Quattro. Walter Röhrl drove the only Audi in Monte, finishing a surprise third.

Ford was in with two different cars. Kalle Grundel used a rear-wheel drive Sierra Cosworth while Stig Blomqvist (in picture) chose the older Sierra 4x4 with a 2.8 litre V6. Grundel retired but Blomqvist finished 4th.

The biggest rival for Lancia seemed to be Mazda, who had replaced their Wankel-engined RX7 with a 4WD version of the 323. In Monte drivers Timo Salonen and Ingvar Carlsson stumbled upon problems with turbo pipes, with former retiring and latter eventually finished fifth.

Volkswagen didn't invest in 4WD technology and relied on their trusty front-wheel driven Golf GTI instead. Kenneth Eriksson took the car to 6th place overall, being the fastest two-wheel driven car.

Subaru was also involved although their glory days were still far ahead, and the 4WD Leone suffered from lack of power at mediocre 180bhp. Per Eklund took the car to 8th place.

2. International Swedish Rally[/size]

Mazda had fixed the turbo issues they faced in Monte Carlo and in Sweden the factory took it's debut WRC victory with Timo Salonen / Seppo Harjanne. Their pace on the second day after changes to front suspension (being done on the second picture) was too much for everyone else.

Juha Kankkunen took 3rd place in the Lancia, behind teammate Mikael Ericsson. He suffered in the first day for sweeping (or, rather, plowing) the road after a heavy snowfall which left the stages with 20cm layer of fresh snow.

Markku Alen made his group A debut with the Lancia Delta after skipping Monte, and had some difficulties to adjust to the car. He found the speed too late on the 2nd day but after a turbo failure on one of the final stages was lucky to keep his 5th place from Stig Blomqvist. Markku was not happy with the result, though...

Stig Blomqvist was again in the heavy Sierra 4x4 and brought it home on 6th place. The car was the heaviest of the group A machinery and it was no wonder he had hard time keeping up with even the 2WD opposition...

Kenneth Eriksson was again the fastest 2WD driver in the Golf GTI. By stage times the Swede would've been as high as 3rd overall, but was late for time control after radiator problems and with the penalties dropped down to 8th.

Mikael Sundström demonstrated some very impressive speed during the first day. Partly thanks to the top drivers suffering from the snowfall, he made five fastest stage times on first seven stages and comfortably led the event before catching a snowbank on the inside of a corner and rolling his Mazda. A good showing by the rather unknown Finn who perhaps could have joined the clan of Flying Finns had he been given a proper opportunity.

Group N was won by Sören Nilsson in Audi Coupe Quattro. In overall results he was 14th.

3. Portugal

Markku Alen in flight towards his fifth win in Portugal with his Lancia. Both Lancias suffered from shock absorber problems, as did the Mazdas, but for once Markku had the luck on his side and he kept the lead all the way to the end.

Young Carlos Sainz was the early leader after setting the fastest time in the first special stage, the spectator stage at Estoril GP circuit. The article writer writer writes 'for the first (and last?) time'. How wrong that turned out to be... Sainz's event was also ruined by shock absorber problems and later retired with a broken turbo.

Jean Ragnotti took the 2wd honours this time. He was very fast with the Renault and gave Markku a serious challenge for the victory, but

Kenneth Eriksson couldn't match Ragnotti's pace, but kept a comfortable lead in the 2wd FIA Cup after being 2nd fastest 2wd driver.

4. Safari

After failing several times with the Group B Quattros, Audi finally took their first victory at Safari. Hannu Mikkola took the heavy 200 Quattro to victory, which was also the first time a 4wd car has won the east african event.

Ari Vatanen made his return to world championship after his horrible accident in Argentina almost two years before, driving a Subaru. His event was hampered by tyre problems and eventually he finished 10th.
